Citizens just do not exert the influence they once had over the laws that effect their every day lives. Today, special interest groups influence these laws through campaign spending and the enlistment of lobbying organizations.
The Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, represented a turning point in campaign finance, allowing unlimited election spending by corporations and special interest groups, and setting the table for other cases, which authorized the creation of "Independent Expenditure Committees,” more commonly known as Super Pacs.
These Super Pacs are able to exhibit an exorbitant amount of influence on the legislative process, that ultimately costs citizens rights and taxpayers money. These lobbying efforts have led directly to increased costs of medications, a declining climate, and a regulatory framework with more holes than a kitchen colander.
While individuals have been able to volunteer for campaigns and even donate funds on election cycles, they are not actually able to influence legislation in any meaningful way. Super Pacs enlist lobbyists to influence legislation that effects the citizens daily lives. By way of example, a bill is current going through Congress (H.R. 8297) to protect women who travel across state lines to receive an abortion in a state where the abortion can be lawfully maintained.
Retail Lobby allows individuals to directly influence legislation through funding that retains lobbyists on behalf of the application users. More than allowing the users the ability to influence legislation, it teaches the users about the legislative process. Further, the application supplies an opportunity for the users to get paid to learn about bills going through the legislative process, while also supplying them a laymen's term explanation of the bill and an explanation from the bill sponsor on why they want the bill to pass.
